NZ Tack Saddlery Co Horse Rug Sizing & Fill Chart
Rug Fill / Weight Guide
The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight
-
Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.
-
Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.
-
Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.
-
Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.
-
As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.
-
Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.
This is an indicative guide only. Always take into account factors such as wind chill, your horse’s age, weight, and condition.

Unfortunately this cover is not strong enough.. my rising 3 year old destroyed it in less than 2 weeks :(
My new boy Gaz looking very stylish in his new cover! Being a thoroughbred, he needs something that keeps him cool on the warm days and protected from the rain and it’s so lightweight and a great fit! Very happy!
Speedy delivery and looks very smart! But check stitching detail where mesh joins canvas… alas I didn’t realise there were stitching faults on the neck cover part before I wrote my horse’s name on it in permanent marker. Was able to repair on my normal sewing machine, but I’m a bit disappointed in regard to the quality control.
Chip is very happy in his new cover. Keeping him dry.
Ready for the Cyclone with new rain sheets. Great service as usual from NZ Tack.
Bought 4 different colours. Very happy with my purchase. They all fit well.
My horse Tony loves his new rug. Great for the weather today of raining but warm. Tony now has one of each of your rugs he loves them and so do I because they are a great fit and so durable
Fits really well, perfect for the four seasons in one day weather in Northland

Thank you for the fast response. Looks great on
An awesome cover for where we live. Not too hot and not too cold. Recommend to people in this ever changing weather.
Cover fits nicely and it water proof
I just purchased the cover this week - alittle disappointed as it’s definitely not waterproof. Rained moderately overnight but my pony was soaking wet in the morning
Really pleased with the cover and also the very quick shipping.
Lovely and light cover for this time of year.
Great service and product. Very happy thank you
