Rug Fill / Weight Guide
The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight

Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.

Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.

Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.

Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.

As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.

Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.

I was lucky enough to win a 50g Duke a couple of years ago so was a no brainer to get 200g for the heavy- heavy rain we seem to be to getting. Great for horses that are wider and solid in front. He is a SB 15.2 hh.
Even through a cyclone this cover kept Memphis warm and dry. Was comforting to know he was dry through all that rain
The quintessential Kiwi winter rug. Warm enough for Auckland’s worst it keeps my girl snug in any storms, and is always ‘on call’ during winter. Great with or without the neck rug depending how cold it gets.

This cover is fantastic for the bigger built horses like my QH mare. She loves having a neck rug overnight but not during the day. Much easier than swapping covers to match the weather. Even my Appy gelding who isn't a fan of having a cover on, is much happier in his detachable neck cover.

Great fit on my not so easy to fit Gypsy boy. No gaping around the chest and a good length. He did however loose an ear under the neck!! Not our first NZ Tack cover and won't be our last.
I have a heavy mare with big shoulders, she fits other rugs snugly but this rug is a nice fit down through her shoulders and chest she’s in a 5.3 and it’s true to size.. I usually have to buy a XL neck rug and too scared of combos as they don’t do up very well as she’s thick in the neck but the neck rug that comes with this fits close enough The buckles are nice and sturdy and the rug is of good quality. The tail flap is great full but not massive as she has a full tail and it is hard to lift it out the way at the best of times let alone a big flap covering it so usually messy lol Delivery was supa fast and customer support with many questions was fabulous Loving my new rug In the pictures the measurement are in inches and are off my horse not the rug i hope this is helpful
