Rug Fill / Weight Guide
The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight

Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.

Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.

Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.

Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.

As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.

Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.

Unfortunately the first lot I got hadn't been waterproofed. 😔 However I sent photos to NZ tack exchange was organized that day the day after I got instructions for the exchange once I did my bit the covers turned up the next day which was impressive as I'm an RD address. These covers have only been on a few days but the girls are dry and happy 😁 I have purchased a few covers from NZ tack and this was the first time I've had an issue and I'm very happy with the way everything got sorted. Amazing customer service.

This cover wasn't my initial first choice. The team at NZ Tack recommended it after the one I was after wasn't in stock anymore. This was my first purchase from NZ Tack and as always, was a little weary. I needn't have been... these covers have been put through the works the last 8(ish) weeks. Total frost, wind, rain and some beautiful sun (but cold). These covers have stood the test every single time. I am so surprised, but over the moon, to have found a cover that actually works for my horses. My youngster has a very forward shoulder but he's still growing so a bit weedy too. The shoulder and neck space are such a good fit for him. Bonus that the team at NZ Tack were also so lovely. Their customer service was too notch. Definitely going to be buying from here again.

Even though a Norwegian Fjord, my pregnant mare was shedding in July, then came the cold and rain. Existing cover too warm, the no fill one is perfect.

This is the pink duke 200 which I purchased early June and now I have purchased the blue duke 50 g coming into warmer weather, love these covers they fit my Ella perfectly and also for my chunky monkey there are very well designed attachments on the front over chest to play with for the right fitting. Good service always speedy delivery.
Horse stayed dry over two days of rain, plenty of room in the chest, doesn't choke her when she puts down her head to graze. Good weight and keeps solidly in place. Since she's not a super built horse, I did have to put knots in the belly straps. I would love to see a larger tail flap, but overall a great cover!

I love love love the quality, and how well it fits on my horse. I refuse to buy anything but Nz tack because of this. I wouldn't say my horse is a rug ruiner, but he does put them to the test. I love that I can chuck it on and not worry about him getting soaked or being too hot, (as he runs quite warm.) I love NZ tack for the peace of mind I get putting it on my boy. My last season rug has taken a beating being left outside most of the time, and it still stood up to the test during these last two weeks of non stop rain and storms. 10/10 recommended these rugs. Not only are they nice bold colors, but they sit well (ie: no shoulder rub), and they hold up to pretty much anything.

Love the option of rug only for horses that have thick, long manes like my 2yr old cob. I don’t want to but a combo or detachable when he already feels the heat under all that hair. Generous roomy fit that suits this build too.
