A silica-based barrier cream that creates the conditions a wound needs to heal, rather than trying to do the healing for it.
How it works
Zarasyl combines silica with the other properties of an optimal healing environment. It forms a barrier over open wounds and damaged skin, and it adheres well — which on a horse is half the problem solved.
- Moisturising. A moist environment has been shown to help wounds heal.
- Semi-occlusive. It lets oxygen through the barrier, and oxygen is vital to healing — so it protects without smothering.
- Silica. The third most common trace element in mammals, associated with healthy connective tissue growth.
- Sympathetic to skin, so it stays comfortable under a dressing or out in the open.
What to use it on
Cuts, abrasions, sores, wounds, skin ulcers and burns.
Ingredients
Polyethylene glycol 3350, polyethylene glycol 400, propylene glycol, water, phenoxyethanol, polysilicic acid, sodium chloride.
Directions
Clean and dry the affected area first, then apply liberally once or twice daily. External use only, equine use only. Store cool and dry, and keep away from children.

The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight

Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.

Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.

Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.

As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.
