Start with the sleeve
- Unfold the stirrup straps and keep the sleeve separate.
- With both logos facing you, thread the pointed end of the stirrup straps through the sleeve, then push the sleeve all the way up to just underneath the buckle.
- Thread the pointed end through the eye (the small hole at the top) of your stirrup iron with the logo facing downward.
- Keep pulling it through, all the way up through the sleeve and behind the buckle.
- Once you have buckled your stirrup straps at your preferred length, pull the pointed end through the buckle and back down through the sleeve. Both logos should now be visible once more.
- Hold the stirrup straps loosley, behind the buckle, as though your hand is a temporary stirrup bar.
- Pull the buckle down toward your stirrup iron. The sleeve should now be snug against the iron with the buckle sitting just above the sleeve.
- You can either put the excess through the eye of your stirrup iron one more time, or you can fold it under the top of the stirrup iron, then tuck the remaining length back up through the sleeve to secure.

FAQ
All your questions, answered.

Stirrup leather sizing varies by discipline (jumping needs shorter, dressage needs longer) and rider height, but generally, adults use 54-inch (137cm) for jumping and 60-inch (152cm) for dressage, with kids starting around 48-inch (122cm).
- Jumping/Hunter/XC (Adult): 54 inches (approx. 137 cm).
- Dressage (Adult): ~60 inches (approx. 152 cm) or longer for a straighter leg.
- Children/Small Adults: 42-48 inches (approx. 105-122 cm)
-
Armpit Method (Quick Estimate):
- With boots on, place the stirrup iron under your armpit and let the leather hang down.
- For jumping, the stirrup should sit just below your armpit.
- For dressage, it should come closer to or slightly past the armpit.
-
Inseam Method (More Accurate for Dressage):
- Measure from your ankle bone up your inseam, then double it and add 6-8 inches for dressage.
-
Brand-Specific Guides:
- Check the brand's chart (e.g., Wintec, CWD, Devoucoux) as sizing can vary significantly between manufacturers
- Discipline: Jumping requires shorter leathers for a two-point position, while dressage needs longer ones for a deep seat.
- Personal Build: Taller riders need longer, shorter riders need shorter leathers.
- Saddle Type: Dressage saddles often need different leathers (sometimes single-piece) than jumping saddles.
The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight
-
Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.
-
Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.
-
Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.
-
Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.
-
As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.
-
Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.
This is an indicative guide only. Always take into account factors such as wind chill, your horse’s age, weight, and condition.
