The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.
Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.
Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.
Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.
As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.
Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.

My girl lives in this as she is a magnet for all biting bugs! I love it keeping her cool while keeping the insects at bay. She is a sensitive girl and I honestly think she's happier in it than out of it. I love that the neck has a velcro tab so it's easy to connect to her fly mask too! The belly mesh is fantastic too as without it she gets bitten on her tummy. Love nztack rugs💜 4'6 for a 14.3hh quarter horse x.

It did rip after a week of use but I think he ripped it while being caught in a fence but it really helped with the flies.
I absolutely love these rugs. I bought my first for my first OTTB back in 2021 & haven’t looked back since! I wouldn’t swap to any other fly rug. The white also helps absorb less heat & the big underbelly section adds more protection from flies

This is such a great cover absolutely love it! I came up this morning to change my horses cover after it rained, to find him completely dry even though this cover isn't waterproof it is airy so it made him dry off a lot quicker. It kept him nice and cool from the hot sun! I love how it covers the whole underneath part of his stomach to keep those nasty flys away! Would definitely recommend this!

Great fit on all my 3 horses, even though they are all quite different shapes. They seemed much happier today, it was a hot day and they didn't sweat under the mesh and the tummy flap protected more of them from the flies. Very pleased with these covers.

With 3 horses I have bought a lot of covers, and this is my 6th NZ Tack cover, I love them because with the high side gusset my broad chested Morgan never gets rubbed or looses hair. This is the only brand I have had 100% success with. Today Ive put on this gorgeous white fly cover for the first time. Not expecting it to stay white for long, but it’s certainly keeping the flies off, he is so much calmer.
Awesome rug. This boy is over 17 hands high (solid xbred from Molesworth station), is in a 5'9 and it fits him well (pic is terrible as hes uphill from me). Hes a big babysitter so needed something strong that the babies wouldnt rip. This works brilliantly
It’s lovely and soft mesh, it keeps the flys and biting insects off nicely, making for a much less grumpy horse. It fits well enough, one of the hooks on the belly cover comes undone frequently but it’s stayed on so I’m happy.
All four of my horses are in these covers now, love them! The 4'3 fits brilliantly all over, but the belly piece is a little large for my pony.

This is my 6th NZTACK cover that I have added to my collection, and it is just as amazing as the rest. I absolutely love the quality of these covers and I like the how they have longer neck covers that still cover their neck even when they are eating grass. All my NZTACK covers have lasted the 3 years I've had them and they are still going strong. Considering my horse is a bit of a rug wrecker, these covers hold up well. Another excellent purchase! Keeps her cool and keeps the pesky flies off.

Have gone up a size to 5'3" from her normal 5' which has given her more room in the shoulders. It is doing a great job on a 30 year old horse that overheats very easily.

Just received my mesh super tough combo and put it on my horse. It fits really well and will keep her cool on these very hot days. My other two horses also have mesh rugs from NZ Tack which they are wearing at present. They don't sweat in these as the air can circulate better than their cotton summer rugs which they tend to sweat in. These rugs are a great fit and are true to size. Also great value for money, free shipping and great service. A++

I LOVE this rug. My horse has sensitive pink skin and gets quite sweaty and hot under his rugs, but when he doesn’t have it on he gets sun burnt. This rug is awesome, super breathable so he doesn't get too hot and also helps him keep cool and protects him from the sun, plus its a great price and quality!!
My horse loves his new Supa-tuff Mesh Fly Combo. From the moment I first put it on him he got his swag on threw some shade and was all of a sudden super cool. His 5 paddock mates are jealous AF. He's on older chestnut and the flies piss him off and he gets fried by the sun (did I mention he's a ginga), but the moment he slipped into this flysheet he started to show off and pounce around he got very alpha with one paddock mate who got too curious (something he never does as he's an old boy). He's a shredder of summer sheets so I'll be interested to see how this one goes. The extra mesh panel under the tummy is going to please him no end and 4'9" size is perfect for his 15.1 HH stocky station bred shape. Delivery was super fast we live rurally and deliveries to us are usually as slow as a wet week, this arrived the next day after ordering! Excellent service, price and arrived in good time. The cover looks tough to handle the job. It is a bit tight around the shoulders and letting it out in front makes the belly cover sit back further and very close to his sheath - more so on day 2. I'm sure all will mould to him with a bit of time. Thanks.

Absolutely love NZTack covers this is my 3 purchase in 12 months such good quality but also amazing customer service. Fast, and so friendly. when a small part of stitching came undone on one after a short amount of time they sent me a replacement no questions asked and suggested i keep both so i had a spare!
