Description
The best selling medium weight turnout style for 3 winters!
The Rhino Plus Vari-Layer rug offers 250g turnout protection in a contemporary lightweight design. Embracing our unique layering system, this turnout rug with a detachable turnout neck provides exceptional protection to keep your horse warm and dry without the bulk.
The tough 1000D polypropylene outer protects with a reliable waterproof, breathable Barrier Layer underneath. Polypropylene is an incredibly strong alternative to the widely used polyester turnout material, but if it gets damaged, the protective barrier layer will keep your horse dry! The technical Thermobonded fiberfill combines superior, long-lasting warmth without weightiness, and the 'silky-feel' shine-enhancing lining gives a luxuriously comfortable feel to your horse.
The V-Front Closure, Surefit Neck Design and front leg arches offer greater freedom of movement for your horse during their field time. The adjustable cross surcingles and tail strap delivers a snug, non-slip, secure fit, even after laying down or rolling. The integrated liner loops offer multiple rugging options and the opportunity to upgrade this rug's warmth with the Horseware® liner range.
The Rhino® Plus with Vari-Layer also comes with our guarantee that your rug will remain waterproof and breathable for a minimum of three years—flexible rugging for all seasons, with more warmth and less weight.
Vari-Layer technology uses inner layers (150g and 100g) of thermobonded fibrefill within the rug across the back and hip to concentrate it where your horse needs it most, reducing the fill as you get to the bottom of the rug. Less drag on the horse, more comfort!

FAQ
All your questions, answered.

The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight
-
Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.
-
Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.
-
Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.
-
Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.
-
As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.
-
Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.
This is an indicative guide only. Always take into account factors such as wind chill, your horse’s age, weight, and condition.
