NZ Tack Saddlery Co Horse Rug Sizing & Fill Chart
Rug Fill / Weight Guide
Not sure what rug your horse needs right now? Our free Horse Rug Forecaster checks your local weather and tells you what rug weight your horse needs today, tonight and over the next 3 days. It works anywhere in New Zealand and adjusts for clipped horses and horses that feel the cold.
The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. Humans need it much warmer, at around 25–30 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight
-
Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.
-
Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.
-
Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.
-
Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.
-
As a general guide, a healthy unclipped horse with shelter usually doesn't need a winter rug until it feels colder than about 5 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.
-
Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.
This is an indicative guide only. Always take into account factors such as wind chill, your horse’s age, weight, and condition. For advice based on your local forecast, try the Horse Rug Forecaster.

15 happy horses are now able to keep the rain off their backs and also be comfortable when the sun comes out
Nice roomy lightweight cover!
Happy to say my old girl stayed dry all day during the pesky showers, but was cool enough in the in between fine spells. I bought a size bigger (her size was sold out), and it is a bit big so I would say the covers are true to size and roomy. Pleased with the cover so far.
Always great to deal with. Cover is amazing kept him dry in some torrential rain.
Here the lovely long legged model Jet is sporting the latest NZ Tack hybrid mesh sheet in purple, a real stand out in the paddock!! This is my second attempt.. I accidentally bought a 5'0 for my new boy and didn't realise until after he'd worn it and wondered why it was tight across the chest as they are usually a fairly generous fit.. but to be fair he is 17h.. oops!! I didn't hesitate to jump back online and buy another in the next size up.. I love these rugs I own 6 now! Highly recommend !!
This is my new boy Jet in his new purple mesh combo .. I 💜 these covers and now have one ( or maybe 2) in each colour. They are a great fit and a reliable cover that keep the ponies dry and not too hot in this unpredictable weather.
The queen approves her new cover. She doesn’t like wearing rugs but didn’t get as annoyed because this turnout rug is so light weight, and doesn’t make her hot in warm weather. It’s a good fit and the colour is awesome on her.

Great fit, nice and breezy, ideal for changeable weather. I like the large tail flap. The waterproof fabric is lightweight - this is great especially in this crazy spring weather.
