The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.

This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.

Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight

  • Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.

  • Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.

  • Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.

  • Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.

  • As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.

  • Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.

How Nikwax SoftShell Proof Wash-In protects.

Nikwax SoftShell Proof Wash-In is easy and quick to apply in a washing machine, and its highly Durable Water Repellency (DWR) develops on air drying. The washing machine application ensures that the treatment goes right through the garment, treating seams, tapes and cords, as well as the fabric.

The need for tumble drying is removed, this saves energy and protects more vulnerable, older, garments from heat. Nikwax SoftShell Proof Wash-In leaves a flexible water repellent treatment on individual fibres allowing moisture vapour to pass through, maintaining breathability.

Uses per bottle:

  • Top loading machine wash: 300ml for a maximum of two garments
  • Front loading machine wash: approximately 100ml per garment
  • Hand wash: approximately 50ml per garment
How to Use

For best results remove all non-washable parts and always clean item(s) first with Nikwax Tech Wash in a separate wash cycle. No need to dry item(s) before waterproofing.

  1. Remove all detergent build up from the detergent dispenser.
  2. Place maximum of 2 clean garments in washing machine.
  3. Use 100ml per garment.
  4. Run 30°C synthetic cycle and slow spin.

To maintain waterproofing always wash with Nikwax Tech Wash. Do not use detergents.
