FAQ
All your questions, answered.

Lami-Cell sizing, all in one place. Every measurement below comes from Lami-Cell's own published size charts. Where a range is sized Medium/Large rather than in centimetres, we've listed the actual boot height so you can measure your horse's leg and compare.
Not sure after reading this? Email us at sales@nztack.co.nz with your horse's height and a measurement or two and we'll tell you what to order.
How to measure
Boots
Boot sizes are given as the height of the boot — top edge to bottom edge, down the outside. Hold a tape against your horse's leg and compare: a tendon boot should sit below the knee and finish above the fetlock joint without pressing on either. A fetlock boot should enclose the joint and sit clear of the pastern.
Halters
Measure the noseband (around the nose, roughly two fingers below the cheekbone) and the crown piece (over the poll, from one side of the throat to the other). Match to the table below. Most full-size horses take Full; cobs, larger ponies and finer Thoroughbred types usually take Cob.
Rugs, fly sheets and hoods
Lami-Cell rugs are sized in centimetres, not feet. Measure from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock — that gives you the B measurement in the rug table, which converts straight to the NZ/UK size in feet.
Boots & leg protection
Heights are Lami-Cell's published boot heights, measured top to bottom.

Lami-Cell's V22 range also runs in S and XL internationally; the sizes listed above are the ones we bring into New Zealand.
Our rule of thumb: Medium suits most horses up to around 16hh, Large suits taller or bigger-boned types. That is our guidance from selling the range, not a Lami-Cell specification — if your horse is between, measure the leg and go by the boot height.
Halters
Lami-Cell's published halter measurements, in centimetres. These are the measurements of the halter itself.
| Measurement | Pony | Cob | Full | X-Full |

Fly sheets, rugs & hoods
Lami-Cell rugs and fly sheets are sized in centimetres. Here is how those convert to the sizes you're used to.
| Lami-Cell size (A) | Body length (B) | NZ/UK equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 120 cm | 170 cm | 5'7" |
| 125 cm | 175 cm | 5'9" |
| 130 cm | 180 cm | 6'0" |
| 135 cm | 185 cm | 6'2" |
| 140 cm | 190 cm | 6'4" |
| 145 cm | 195 cm | 6'6" |
| 150 cm | 200 cm | 6'7" |
| 155 cm | 205 cm | 6'9" |
A is the top line of the rug, from the neck opening along the back to the tail. B is the body length — centre of the chest, along the side, to the point of the buttock. B is the measurement that matches NZ/UK rug sizing in feet.
Already know your horse's rug size? Find it in the right-hand column and order the centimetre size on the same row. A horse in a 6'3" rug takes the 135 cm or 140 cm Lami-Cell, depending on build — size up for a broad, well-covered horse.
Hoods
The Lycra Hood with Chest Protection comes in Medium and Large. It is stretch lycra, so it is forgiving. Lami-Cell does not publish measurements for it — as a guide, Medium suits most horses up to around 16hh and Large above that.

The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight
-
Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.
-
Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.
-
Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.
-
Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.
-
As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.
-
Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.
This is an indicative guide only. Always take into account factors such as wind chill, your horse’s age, weight, and condition.
