A syringe with a soft latex tube, for a lamb that is too weak to suck.

A cold, flat lamb hasn't the strength to suck, and holding a teat in its mouth achieves nothing — the milk has to be delivered straight to the stomach.

Before you use it

Warm the lamb first. A lamb below normal body temperature can't digest milk, so feeding before it has warmed can do more harm than good

Using it

Measure the tube against the lamb from its mouth to the last rib before you start, and mark it, so you know how far it should go. Pass it gently over the tongue and down; it should slide without resistance. If the lamb coughs or struggles, or the tube stops short, take it out and start again.

Deliver slowly. Rushing it is how milk ends up in the lungs.

This is a technique worth being shown before you need it. Ask your vet or an experienced neighbour to run through it with you at the start of the season.
