This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.

Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight

  • Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.

  • Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.

  • Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.

  • Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.

  • As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.

  • Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.

he Korsteel Stainless Steel Jointed Eggbutt Bradoon Snaffle Bit is often seen with either a fixed or sliding cheek weymouth, the nutcracker action acts on the bars and sometimes the palate and works well for horses that prefer a single jointed snaffle bit.

Bradoons are also very useful to use as snaffle bits for smaller heads or ponies, as they are basically a snaffle bit with a smaller ring.

Eggbutt bradoons are attached to the sliphead of the weymouth bridle, and fit in the corners of the horses mouth with the weymouth below.

Generally the jointed bradoon should be 1/4" or 1/2" bigger than the weymouth/ normal bit size. If the eggbutt jointed bradoon is to be used as a snaffle on its own, the normal bit size should be purchased.
