Rug Fill / Weight Guide
The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight
-
Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.
-
Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.
-
Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.
-
Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.
-
As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.
-
Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.
This is an indicative guide only. Always take into account factors such as wind chill, your horse’s age, weight, and condition.

A palatable liquid iron blood-building supplement for horses. Ironcyclen® liquid contains three soluble forms of iron together with the blood building co-factors copper and cobalt, which are essential for red blood cell and hemoglobin production.
What is Ironcyclen?
IRONCYCLEN® is a specially formulated supplement to maximize hemoglobin and red blood cell production which helps improve the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood for peak performance.
The highly palatable molasses flavored liquid formulation contains:
- Three forms of iron for maximum absorption.
- Organic iron aminoates which eliminate gut irritation.
- Co-factors of copper and cobalt essential to incorporate iron into haemoglobin.
Recommended for:
- High performance horses – Training and competing are added stresses which increase the demand for iron.
- Animals in training prone to low blood counts and anemia.
Why choose Ironcyclen?
- Supports improved blood counts – Only 15-18% of the iron in the feedstuffs of the average horse’s diet is absorbed.
- Formulated for maximum absorption – IRONCYCLEN® contains 3 forms of iron which are readily absorbed by the gut and are generally of a higher quality than the regular iron used in many other supplements.
- Essential balance of co-factors – Copper and cobalt are essential for red blood cell and haemoglobin production. Without these co-factors, even with high levels of iron, the horse will still be unable to produce optimal amounts of red blood cells.
- Liquid formulation – The unique formulation makes IRONCYCLEN® easy to mix into feed or administered directly over the tongue.
