Rug Fill / Weight Guide
The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight
-
Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.
-
Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.
-
Check your horse regularly to make sure they are neither too hot nor too cold.
-
Consider your horse’s age and natural ability to stay warm.
-
As a general guide, rugging is usually appropriate when temperatures drop below 5–10 °C, but always adjust for your horse’s individual needs.
-
Always ensure rugs are waterproof. A wet rug is worse than no rug at all.
This is an indicative guide only. Always take into account factors such as wind chill, your horse’s age, weight, and condition.

COOL FIBRE EXTRA is a blend of soy hulls & cold-pressed linseed flake. This blend has the same benefits as COOL FIBRE ORIGINAL with several additional benefits from linseed which is a rich source of Omegas 3,6 & 9. These include: immune system and joint support, improved coat & hoof condition and anti-inflammatory factors. In addition, lignans contain antioxidants which contain cancer prevention properties. Linseed also provides essential amino acids for improved muscular and topline development. It is palatable, low in sugar & starch and contains healthy fats from residual oil for conditioning and coat chine as well as mucilage production for intestinal support & potential gut healing properties.
The co-product of milling soy meal, soy hulls have long been regarded internationally as an excellent source of fibre for horses because of their superior digestibility. This superior digestibility is why soy hulls are included in the ‘Super Fibre’ family of fibres alongside beet pulp and linseed flake. Soy hulls are the outer shell (or husk) of the soy beans & while the soy hulls have a moderate level of quality proteins and residual oil, they are valued in equine nutrition for their QUALITY FIBRE.
COOL FIBRE EXTRA is an excellent fibre base that you can use as a great fibre mash to begin to build your Total Meal Ration. Make sure you still include a ‘long fibre’ such as chaff or chaffage, to support peristalis in the digesta and to encourage your horse to chew and grind their meal to support additional saliva production.
While suitable for horses with Metabolic Disorders, such as Laminitis and Cushings, each horse or pony should be managed on a case by case basis and only after a professional consultation.
COOL FIBRE EXTRA has the same benefits as COOL FIBRE and several additional benefits to provide at least a few good reasons to make it a stable favorite:
