The standard plastic cone, used to stop an animal licking, chewing or scratching at stitches, a wound or a hot spot while it heals.
A dog that pulls its stitches out on day three ends up back under anaesthetic, so a fortnight in a cone is the cheaper option.
Sizing
The measurement is the depth of the cone, from the collar to the rim. Measure from the base of your animal's neck to the tip of its nose, and pick a collar at least that deep — if the nose reaches past the rim, they'll get at the wound.
- 7.5cm and 10cm — kittens, small cats, very small dogs
- 12.5cm and 15cm — cats and small dogs
- 20cm — medium dogs
- 25cm — large dogs
- 30cm — very large dogs
Fitting it
Thread the animal's own collar through the tabs so the cone can't be backed out of. Snug enough that it stays put, loose enough for two fingers underneath.
Leave it on full-time for the first few days. Most animals settle to it within an hour. Raise food and water bowls, and remove it only under supervision.

The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range where the body can maintain its core temperature with little to no extra energy expenditure. For humans, this range is quite narrow at 21–28 °C, but for horses it’s much broader at 5–25 °C.
This difference means we should avoid rugging horses based on how cold we feel. Over-rugging can lead to serious health issues, including metabolic problems and thermoregulatory dysfunction.
Tips for Choosing a Winter Rug Weight

Clipped horses may need a heavier gram fill to stay comfortable.

Remember: horses warm themselves more easily than they cool down under a rug. If unsure, choose a lighter rug.
